# Use with Claude

> Install the Effective plugin for Claude, sign in with OAuth, and research filings, carriers, and products from a Claude conversation.

The Effective plugin for Claude lets you compare insurance products, filings, coverage wording, and
rate changes, review actuarial evidence, and prepare working filings without leaving Claude. Claude
signs in as you through OAuth, so you don't need an API key.

## What the plugin adds

* **The Effective connector.** It connects Claude to Effective's remote MCP server so Claude can
  search and read carriers, products, filings, and source documents, and manage working filings.
* **The `effective` skill.** It helps Claude turn insurance tasks into the right Effective calls,
  from comparing competitors to preparing filings and reviewing evidence.

The plugin runs no local scripts, hooks, or executables.

## Before you start

* **An Effective account.** If your organization already uses Effective, ask its Effective
  administrator to invite you. If it doesn't, email
  [support@effectiveailabs.com](mailto:support@effectiveailabs.com) with your organization's name
  to request a workspace.
* **Effective credits.** Discovery and some other requests use your organization's Effective
  credits, as API requests do.
* **A paid Claude plan** (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner
  may need to make the Effective plugin or connector available before members can install it.

## Install the plugin

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find the plugin">
    In Claude, open **Customize** in the sidebar, select **Plugins**, and open the **Discover** tab.
    Search for **Effective**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the plugin">
    Select **Effective** and click **Add**. Adding the plugin doesn't connect Effective yet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect your account">
    Open the plugin's **Connectors** tab and click **Connect** next to Effective. Claude opens
    Effective's sign-in page so you can [sign in with OAuth](#sign-in-with-oauth).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Verify the connection">
    Start a new chat and ask:

    > Which Effective account am I connected as?

    Claude answers with your Effective user and organization.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You don't enter a server URL or run any setup commands. The plugin is saved to your Claude account,
so it also syncs to Claude Code (v2.1.273 or later) when you sign in with the same Claude account.
It doesn't sync when Claude Code uses an API key or runs on a cloud provider such as Amazon
Bedrock.

## Sign in with OAuth

When you connect, Claude opens Effective's sign-in page in your browser.

1. Sign in with the account your organization uses for Effective.
2. Review and approve the access Claude asks for.
3. Return to Claude. Effective shows as connected.

Claude stores the OAuth token. You don't create or paste credentials.

The connection can request two scopes:

| Scope | Allows Claude to |
| - | - |
| `mcp:read` | Find and read Effective data, such as filings, carriers, and products. |
| `mcp:write` | Create, update, or delete Effective data, such as filing workspaces. |

Scopes cap what Claude can do. Your role and your organization's access rules still apply, so
Claude can never see or change more than you can in Effective.

## Manage tool permissions

In **Customize → Connectors**, select **Effective** to see its tools. For each tool, choose whether
Claude uses it automatically, asks you first, or never uses it. For example, block the tools that
create or update working filings if you only want Claude to research.

## Try it

Claude picks the Effective tools it needs from your request, so you don't have to name them. Try:

* Compare competitors' filed rate changes for a line of business and state, with supporting
  evidence.
* Compare exclusions and endorsements in two filings, including form numbers and editions.
* Review a filing's actuarial memo and summarize the assumptions behind its rate change.
* Create or update a working filing and organize its document references by schedule.
* Review an objection letter and draft a response.

Preparing a working filing in Effective doesn't submit it to a regulator.

## Disconnect or remove

* **Disconnect:** open **Customize → Plugins**, select **Effective**, and disconnect Effective on the
  plugin's **Connectors** tab. You can also disconnect from **Customize → Connectors**. The plugin
  stays installed.
* **Turn off:** select **Disable plugin** to turn Effective off without removing it.
* **Remove:** select **Remove** to remove the plugin from your Claude account.

Disconnecting deletes Claude's token. It doesn't change your Effective data.

## Troubleshooting

* **Effective isn't in the plugin directory:** your organization may not allow it yet. Ask your
  Claude owner or administrator.
* **Sign-in doesn't finish:** sign in with your Effective account, not a personal one, and complete
  the sign-in when Claude prompts you. If you aren't a member of an Effective workspace, ask your
  administrator for an invitation.
* **Claude doesn't use Effective:** check that Effective shows as connected, then name Effective in
  your request.
* **The connection stops responding:** disconnect and connect again from the plugin's
  **Connectors** tab. This doesn't affect your Effective data.
* **Claude can read but not make changes:** the connection may lack `mcp:write`, or your role may
  not allow the change. Disconnect and connect again, then check your role in Effective.
* **Requests fail with a credits error:** your organization may be out of Effective credits. Ask
  your Effective administrator.
* **Claude can't find something you can see in Effective:** Claude uses your account's access, and
  not every Effective feature is available to Claude yet. Email support with what you asked and what
  you expected.
